Guerschon Yabusele, the star of the Paris 2024 Olympics. He led France in scoring in the 82-73 quarterfinal victory over Canada and the 73-69 semifinal victory over Germany.
The Real Madrid star has taken a step forward since his time with the Boston Celtics between 2017 and 2019.
Shortly after France’s semifinal win on Thursday, Yabusele told the Boston Globe’s Gary Washburn that “he’s got to go to the Celtics to bring me back. ”
I just spent some time with Guerschon Yabusele, who identified me and said with a smile, “You have to tell them (the #Celtics) to bring me back. “Yabu, former first circular selection of BOS. He now plays for Real Madrid.
Yabusele is an absolutely different player than the one who left the NBA in 2019. They have a reliable striker who has varied skills on both sides of the ball. During the Olympics he averaged 12. 8 points, 3. 6 rebounds and 1. 2 assists per game. and established itself as a key component of the French rotation.
Unfortunately for Yabusele, it’s unlikely the Celtics make a move to bring him back to Boston. Joe Mazzulla’s team will head into the new season with the aim of defending their championship and securing back-to-back titles. As such, Yabusele would likely struggle to crack the rotation and earn any legitimate playing time.
However, this does not mean that Yabusele will return to the NBA. Another 29 groups could potentially expand their interest to see what he can bring to their rotation. Last season, he played 24 games in the ACB League, averaging 9. 3 assists and 3 rebounds and shooting 39. 4% from the perimeter and 49% from the field.
Yabusele has also played 22 games in the Euroleague, the party spot in Europe. He averaged 10 points and five rebounds and shot 48. 1% from three-point diversity and 56. 3% from deep.
Yabusele has one game left in the Olympics. If he continues to thrive and it turns out he’s among the most sensible skills left in the tournament, he might get some calls from NBA franchises over the rest of the summer.
However, it’s highly unlikely that any of those phone calls came from Brad Stevens regarding the Celtics’ last spot.
