The explanation for why Renato Veiga needs to leave Chelsea just six months after his arrival has been revealed, with reports also detailing how much the Blues are asking from Borussia Dortmund.
The flexible youngster joined Chelsea from Swiss club Basel for a £12m payment and has been a trusted player for Enzo Maresca this season, 18 times in all competitions.
However, several very sensible sources have shown that Veiga, who since his arrival has basically played as a left back, has reached a non-public agreement with Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund and that the two clubs are now in agreement.
Fabrizio Romano revealed in X that Veiga “should leave” and that Chelsea have opened the door to a permanent transfer, rather than a mere loan.
Journalist Ben Jacobs also claimed that Chelsea were keen to cash in and that the Blues were bringing in more than £20m.
In addition, Jacobs stated a loan move from Wolves had already been knocked back by Chelsea, and while the club is happy with his development, the player wants to leave for one specific reason.
Veiga’s current position as a substitute left-back who invests internally is the position the player likes. He can play in central midfield or left back, as well as in the center of defense as a centre-back.
Romano showed that the player’s desire to leave revolves around the fact that he needs to become a center back, more than in the other two positions mentioned. He has only played in this position twice for Chelsea, either in the Europa Conference League against Shamrock. Rovers and Panathinaikos.
According to sources, Dortmund will deploy Veiga in his favored central defender role.
With Levi Colwill, Tosin Adarabioyo, Wesley Fofana, Benoit Badiashile and Axel Disasi as natural defenders in this position, Veiga is in danger of falling to the bottom of the pecking order, despite Fofana’s usual injuries.
In fact, in his career so far, he has basically played in defensive midfield, followed by left back and centre-back.
Chelsea manager Maresca was quizzed by the media in his latest press conference ahead of their next Premier League game about Veiga and he gave a detailed explanation of the situation.
“I had a chat with Renato,” said Maresca. “I told him playing in the position he’s playing with us, it’s given him the chance to join the national team and created speculation around him, which only happens when you’re playing well.
“If there’s a player who needs to play only one position, he’s going to struggle. We will have to inform them to play in other positions because it is something intelligent for the player and the club.
“I am not aware that there is an agreement [with Dortmund] for Renato. Yesterday he was here to paint with us. Today he is here to paint with us. Then we’ll see if something happens. We brought Renato from Basel and he played well in other positions.
“This has allowed him to join the [Portugal] national team for the first time in his life. Even if he’s not playing in his [preferred position], he’s playing for his national team in his early 20s since joining Chelsea. We are very proud about that.”
Elsewhere, left-back Ben Chilwell has been excluded from Chelsea’s latest FA Cup clash against Ligue 2 side Morecambe, with Maresca saying it would be best to sit him out as an exit is likely.
TEAMtalk resources have revealed that West Ham United are hoping to land a one-two punch from defender and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall for new boss Graham Potter.
Elsewhere, reports in Spain have claimed that Chelsea have ‘made an offer’ for Deportivo La Coruna winger Yeremay Hernandez.
The 22-year-old has 8 aims and 3 assists in 18 league matches in Spain’s moment department this season, in which Deportivo 17th.
