The RSHP wins a festival for a 1. 5-hectare plot of land on the outskirts of La Défense, west of Paris, in a “low-carbon” district with new connections for pedestrians and cyclists.
The mixed-use design of the Jean Moulin includes a new public area connecting the La Défense monetary district with nearby Puteaux, along the Patrick-Devedjian ring road, as well as two new buildings.
A 15-story tower will offer apartments for academics and young professionals, while a six- to eight-story construction will house curved offices with a tiered rooftop terrace. Both constructions will be modular structures with a wooden structure.
The proposal includes leisure, sports and entertainment facilities, as well as a centre, a yoga centre, a food court and a 1,400 m2 covered market on two levels.
A green promenade runs along the linear site with connections for pedestrians, bike lanes, and public transportation.
RSPH says it has considered both embodied and operational carbon in its proposals, with both new buildings designed to be adapted for reuse.
The practice, founded by the late British architect Richard Rogers, teamed up with local practice AREP and Swiss landscape architects VOGT, among others, for its entry to the contest for the Empreintes project.
Finally, five sites around La Défense will be renovated with new public and “low-carbon” structures.
Stephen Barrett, Partner at RSHP, said: “The task presents a significant challenge, as it occupies a newly governed interstitial site through large-scale infrastructure and dialed through radical point adjustments that are lately almost about to navigate.

RSHP’s proposals for the Jean Moulin area
“The fact that it is possible to transform such challenging environments into places where future generations can live and function well, while delivering inclusive and exemplary mixed-use, low-carbon development, is exactly why we consider this project so important. “
Georges Siffredi, president of the Département des Hauts-de-Seine and of Paris La Défense, said: ‘The winning team for the Empreintes project shares our vision of a new urbanism imagined for the future of La Défense.
“Sustainability, diversity and reversibility have been placed at the heart of the proposal. The redevelopment of Jean Moulin will allow the renovation of this district and the creation of new urban links between the business district and the city centre of Puteaux.
RSHP was founded in the 1970s as the Richard Rogers Partnership. After joining Rogers Stirk Harbor Partners in 2007, he replaced his existing call to RSHP last year.
Rogers died in December 2021, at the age of 88. His rise to foreign stardom and one of the buildings for which he is most remembered, the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris. The RSHP was founded in Paris since the beginning of 2021.
