The Tottenham striker’s number one target is worth it, as another FIVE strikers were turned away

Tottenham Hotspur have been given the chance to sign striker Jonathan David for a discounted price, with a journalist giving a full update on the club’s long-term plans.

Tottenham sold club icon Harry Kane to Bayern Munich last summer in a £100m deal but never actually replaced the England captain. Richarlison’s form remains unconvincing, while Son Heung-min is not as lethal as a centre-forward as he is on the left flank.

Tottenham also have Timo Werner and Alejo Véliz in their team, both capable of betting on the 9. But Werner is the most effective in front of goal, while Véliz is only 20 years old and still developing.

Tottenham manager Angel Postecoglou knows that if his team is to challenge elite clubs in England and elsewhere, they will need to have a lethal goalscorer at the top of the attacking line.

Spurs have been linked with a host of forwards in recent months, adding David, Santiago Gimenez, Ivan Toney and Lois Openda, among many others.

Spurs journalist Alasdair Gold now has his details on the club’s attempt to sign a new striker.

It is revealed that despite links to forwards such as Brentford’s Toney, Feyenoord ace Gimenez and Sporting CP star Viktor Gyokeres, Spurs are not planning any concrete moves for any of those players.

It has also been suggested that Juventus striker Federico Chiesa will move to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, but Spurs bosses will not make a bid for him either.

Spurs watched RB Leipzig Openda and were inspired by what they saw. But the fact that Openda’s €80m release clause is triggered in 2025 means it will be too expensive for Spurs this summer.

Instead, Spurs’ new top target to fill Kane’s void is Lille’s David. Manchester United were credited with interest in the Canadian, but Spurs reportedly made their first move for him on Monday.

David’s price in the past reached €60m (£51m), but has plummeted due to his refusal to sign a new contract with Lille.

David had the idea of charging Spurs €40m (£34m) this summer, but in a big boost for Postecoglou, Gold says the 24-year-old will move for just £25m.

Lille will be affected by not being able to link David to a new contract, as it now looks set to take a monetary hit after paying £25. 5m to Gent in August 2020.

If Spurs are missing David, other features come in Juve’s Dusan Vlahovic and Bournemouth talisman Dominic Solanke.

Although Vlahovic and Solanke will want a lot more than David, it’s understandable why Spurs are keen to single out the latter as a priority.
