Thiago Silva becomes the last signing of a call-up for Chelsea

LONDON (AP) – Brazilian central Thiago Silva joined Chelsea on a one-year contract on Friday after his contract expired at Paris Saint-Germain, the English club’s last signing before the new season.

Chelsea said the club had the option to sign Silva for a year.

The 35-year-old defender played for PSG in the Champions League final last weekend, his last match for the French national team after 8 seasons, and described through Chelsea as “one of the biggest names in world football”.

His arrival strengthens Chelsea’s defence after signing England’s left-back Ben Chilwell on Wednesday. They sign for striker Timo Werner and winger Hakim Ziyech to sign for Chelsea since the end of the season.

“Having played at the point for many years, we are confident that your delight and quality will complement the many exciting talents we already have here,” said Chelsea manager Marina Granovskaia.

Silva will bring some leadership to a Chelsea defender who was fragile last season.
