On loan from RB Leipzig until the end of the season, Werner made his Spurs debut in last week’s 2-2 draw against Manchester United at Old Trafford. Although the 27-year-old did not locate the back of the net, he did score. to finish a hand and gave Tottenham enthusiasts an idea of what they can expect from their new striker.
Werner did not sign through Tottenham to update Harry Kane. Instead, Ange Postecoglou wants the German to be an agent of chaos in the final third. Thanks to Werner’s movement and speed in defence, Spurs can be a more damaging attacking team as a whole. It’s the most productive thing Postecoglou has ever done.
Son Heung-min is currently available with the South Korean on duty at the Asian Cup. Son has scored 12 goals in 20 Premier League appearances this season and has flourished as the frontman in Postecoglou’s team. Werner’s arrival has given Spurs another option in Son’s absence, but Richarlison has so far deputised as the first-choice centre forward.
On the left side of the attack, however, Werner has the opportunity to offer anything that can lure defenders into awkward positions. It may simply be Tottenham Hotspur’s Darwin Nunez, some other striker who isn’t known for his ability to get the ball into the basket. Nunez, like Werner, has other qualities.
Nunez has signed with Liverpool’s Erling Haaland. The Uruguayan scored 34 goals in 41 games for Benfica this season before moving to Anfield in the 2022 summer transfer window and many believed he would translate that into goal form in the Premier League. Nunez, however, never controlled to achieve it.
However, Nunez has a vital member of Jurgen Klopp’s squad, with the Uruguayan being particularly effective as Mohamed Salah’s source line: Nunez and Salah have combined to score more goals (five) than any other Premier League pair this season. Liverpool are better with Nunez in the line-up.
Werner will be a striker who scores 2-0 goals per season, but he can still earn a role at Tottenham Hotspur. Postecoglou has already revived Richarlison and his healing powers will now be applied to Werner. Just because the German wasn’t cut Staying out of Chelsea doesn’t mean he can’t succeed at Spurs.
