Clemson is the number one preseason in the Associated Press Top 25, a ballot with nine Big Ten and Pac-12 groups that gives an idea of what has already been overcome in the pandemic of a school football season.
Ohio State (1,504 points) was a close No. 2 Trevor Lawrence and Clemson (1,520), who started in the most sensible rankings for the time in a row. The Tigers beat the Buckeyes in a thrilling school football playoff semi-final last season.
Alabama is No. 3, Georgia, Rival of the Southeastern Conference, No. and Oklahoma, protector champion of Big 12, No. 5. The current LSU national champion is No. 6.
The 85th edition of AP ratings will look like any of them before.
When the season starts, if the season starts, the Buckeyes and all 53 teams in the Bowl Subdivision will no longer be eligible to be included in the Top 25 because they postponed their seasons in the spring.
The Big Ten, home of Ohio State and Number 7 of Penn State, and Pac-12, home to Oregon’s Number 9, canceled their fall sports season due to considerations of coronavirus. Mid-American and Mountain West meetings also announced that they would go play spring football.
The SEC, Atlantic Coast Conference, Big 12, American Athletic, Conference USA and Sun Belt advance with fall sports, with changes: the last 3 Power Five, SEC, ACC and Big 12 conferences have eliminated all or maximum non-conference games and delayed in the start of their seasons in one to three weeks.
This year, a number of attractive non-conference games have been erased from the school football calendar: the state of Ohio in ninth place in Oregon; No. 10 Notre Dame vs. No. 12 Wisconsin at Lambeau Field in Green Bay; No. 14 Texas at LSU; No. 17 Southern California v Alabama in Arlington, Texas; No. 11 Auburn vs. Auburn No. 18 North Carolina in Atlanta.
For now, primary convention games like the state of Ohio-Michigan and Washington-Washington state can still be invented in the spring.
All Division I groups were eligible for the AP Top 25 preseason, however, after the start of the season, only groups that will play in the fall are eligible. This leaves 76 FBS groups since.
If a spring season is played, the AP will also qualify those teams.
BACK TO BACK
Clemson had never been number one in the preseason until last season, and now he’s starting. This is the eighth time since the start of the pre-season survey in 1950 that a team is number one in the preseason two consecutive seasons. Alabama had been the number one preseason from 2016 to 2018, a three-year career.
The Tigers finished last season No. 2 after wasting the championship game against LSU, ending a remarkable nine-season streak in which Clemson finished with the same qualification or qualification he had begun. This included the last five seasons in which Clemson surpassed his pre-season standings, completing No. 1 twice after starting No. 2.
The ACC Tigers, which also welcome runner Travis Etienne, a notable offensive take on Jackson Carman and a forged defense from Tyler Davis, will attempt to reach No. 1 in preseason No. 12 to take down No. 1. Only two groups have been connected. No. 1: State of Florida in 1999 and USC in 2004.
DEFENSE CHAMPIONS
LSU is the first national protective champion to start the following outdoor season, the five most sensitive since Auburn in 2011 (after Cam Newton, the Tigers ranked 23rd in the preseason poll). LSU also lost a Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback and No. 1 in the NFL Draft to Joe Burrow.
Myles Brennan is the new quarterback of the Tigers, who had 14 players determined in the last draft, adding five in the first round. There’s a lot of skill coming back with All-America receiver Ja’Marr Chase, corner Derek Stingley Jr. and Tyler Shelvin.
The Tigers will see the first consecutive national champions since Alabama in 2011 and 2012.
I want to see you here
– North Carolina’s 18th place is ranked preseason for the first time since 2016.
– Cincinnati No. 19 makes its first appearance in the AP preseason survey. The Bearcats have finished in the last two seasons.
– The 20th Minnesota is making its first preseason appearance since 2004. The Gophers were one of last season’s wonderful teams, starting without a qualifier and completing No. 10, their result since 1962.
Scratched
Ohio State extended the longest active preseason streak in the Top 25 to 32, followed by Oklahoma with 21, LSU with 20, Georgia with 19, Alabama with thirteen and Clemson with nine.
SECOND STRONG
The Buckeyes’ 21 votes for first place in the top 2 of preseason were the highest through a no-no. 1 team from Ohio State in 2008, when he was also 21 and behind Georgia, the top-ranked. Florida, which ranked fifth in the 2008 preseason vote with five first-place votes, won the national name that year.
Conference
The South East Conference, as usual, leads the way with seven groups in the Top 25, adding six of the thirteen most sensitive groups.
The Big Ten is next with six, but when the normal season begins, Penn State No. 6, Wisconsin No. 12, Michigan No. 16, Minnesota No. 19 and Iowa No. 24 will no longer be eligible for the vote. The same goes for Oregon No. 9, USC No. 17 and No. 22 in Pac-12, Utah.
SEC – 7 (numbers 3, 4, 6, 8, 11, 13, 25).
Ten large – 6 (No. 2, 7, 12, 16, 19, 24).
12 large – (No. 5, 1, 15, 23).
VAC – (No. 1, 10, 18).
Pac-12 – (numbers 9, 17, 22).
American – 2 (No. 20, 21).
