Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou says they are “keeping” the race for the Premier League name.

Postecoglou’s managed just one point from five games in November and early December, but has since won 4 of five in the league.

Tottenham sit fifth in the table, six-time leaders Liverpool, and will travel to Manchester United in their next game on Sunday.

“By definition, we are, right? So yes, we are,” Postecoglou said.

“I’ve said all along that until the point where you’re not, why would you discount the possibility?

“We’ve been through a tough time and we’re coping with it. We’ve had 4 games where the effects have been unfavourable, but we’ve found our way back. We’re still at it.

“Our performances in general have been pretty consistent, but it’s all pointless if we don’t finish the season stronger than the first half and that’s what we want to do. “

It was expected to be a season of transition at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as Postecoglou took charge and the club’s record goalscorer Harry Kane was sold to Bayern Munich before a ball was kicked.

They have been hampered by injuries, have seen a resurgence and have added German striker Timo Werner and Romanian centre-back Radu Dragusin to their squad this month.

Postecoglou added: “We have scratched and clawed our way into a decent position in the league, we’re into the next round of the cup, those possibilities are always there.

“And we need to apply the technique to them as forcefully as possible, without any worry, or worry about not achieving anything.

“We did it from day one. We’ve had a vision of the kind of football we need to play and some parts are clever and have surprised me with the progress, and other parts are still developing in the early stages of development.

“We have a platform here to post and review from here. “

Meanwhile, the Spurs manager has a new signing, Timo Werner, who is a “different player” to the one he struggled with at rival Chelsea.

The German forward, 27, has joined Spurs on loan from RB Leipzig for the rest of the season, two years after his frustrating spell at Chelsea ended.

Werner scored 23 goals in 89 appearances and won the Champions League with Chelsea.

Postecoglou considers that “what happened in the country is irrelevant. “

“I don’t pay too much attention to it,” the Tottenham manager said.

“I’m in what he can give us today, not in what happened 3 or 4 years ago.

“I would dare to recommend that it’s another player, another person. We’re all evolving. He’s probably more mature on another level of his life. “

Werner could be utilised in the Spurs front three as a replacement for Son Heung-min, who is on international duty with South Korea at the Asian Cup and could miss the next four league games.

“When we communicate about the players who are coming, the question is ‘do I see them betting on the team that I have and that I am creating?'” added Postecoglou.

“Especially with Son out for so long, we felt we needed another player in the front third.

“Timo is at a point where he’s looking for something to replace his current prestige and he’s moving one of those options.

“I think Timo would suit us stylistically. In fact, it has the attributes we’re looking for. He can play in all three positions [on the front line], which adds genuine intensity for us and quality in the front third.

“What happened in the future is irrelevant. He is at an intelligent age, he has aspirations for the national team, he needs to play up front and this club gives him this opportunity. “

Werner joins North London through his new recruit Dragusin.

The Romanian centre-back signed from Genoa on Thursday for £25m and Postecoglou says the 21-year-old has “great attributes”.

“It’s good for us from a football point of view,” Postecoglou said.

“He has wonderful attributes as a young player and, based on my conversations with him as a person, he came here with the right motivations.

“We had pretty transparent targets. If we have an opportunity to improve, we’ll take it. “
