Tottenham have a golden chance to agree a £34m deal and sabotage their Premier League rivals

Tottenham could derail Chelsea’s move plans by acting temporarily to convince Conor Gallagher to sign for them instead of Atletico Madrid. Gallagher has agreed to sign for the Spanish giants, but that resolution has recently been put on hold as the England midfielder returned to the UK. On Tuesday, terms were agreed at club level, with Atletico agreeing to pay around £34m in return for signing Gallagher. The 24-year-old was in Madrid at the weekend to undergo a medical examination and finalize the main points of his contract. However, the agreement is no longer a formality. Chelsea were on the verge of including Atlético youngster Samu Omorodion as part of the deal, but that decision has been made. It has since collapsed. The Blues reportedly attempted to sign Joao Félix, which, if successful, would allow Gallagher to complete his move to Atlético as originally planned.

Tottenham, however, may ruin the process if they can convince Gallagher that it would be better to join them. They have been linked to a possible move for some time and are said to have been following their scenario at Stamford Bridge this summer. A move to Spurs may be attractive to Gallagher for a number of reasons, one of which is that he wouldn’t have to move to Spain and spend time learning a new language. Most likely, the north Londoners would offer him more money than Atletico, given the riches enjoyed by the Premier League’s biggest clubs.

It would also help Gallagher to remain firmly in the English landscape rather than risk being forgotten by moving abroad. Several big-name players, including Fikayo Tomori and Tammy Abraham, have been ignored by the Three Lions since they left for continental Europe. Gallagher may simply refuse to sign for Atletico if Tottenham can tip the scales in his favour with a convincing sales pitch. Such a progression would prevent Chelsea from bringing Felix back to Stamford Bridge, unless they renegotiate that move as a standalone deal. However, it remains to be seen whether Chelsea would be willing to withdraw from negotiations with Atletico to sell Gallagher to a direct rival. Needless to say, his preference would be to move to Spain, but Tottenham could become an unlikely candidate to sign the midfielder if that deal falls through.
