Tottenham have said they could be a candidate with a signing this summer.

Peterborough chairman Darragh MacAnthony believes Tottenham can be a contender with Ivan Toney at the helm.

Brentford striker Toney is next to end his contract and several Premier League clubs have been linked with a move for the England international.

Although talkSPORT understands he could terminate his current contract and leave on a free transfer next summer, Saudi clubs are also interested.

MacAnthony is understood to have included a 30-a-penny sell-on clause in the deal that sent Toney to Brentford, and Peterborough would be hoping for a big deal if the Bees were to sell this summer.

The Posh boss believes the 28-year-old would be the best match for Spurs.

MacAnthony told talkSPORT: “The way Ange [Postecoglou] plays. . . if you could get rid of Richarlison, who is a striker for one in five goals, and put Toney in an Ange team, I think they would have finished first. “3 comfortably last year.

“It’s not because of the sale, others accuse me of that. I already said it. I think Toney would have made the name at Arsenal last year.

“I think it makes Chelsea another team, with all those young players having a leading and international number nine up front.

“And I think he’s in the top three on an Angel team, potentially competing for the name in the final month of the season. “

Spurs are still searching for a new striker following Harry Kane’s move to Bayern Munich last summer.

Postecoglou’s men were forced into goal percentage last season, with captain Heung-min Son leading North London with 17 league goals.

Richarlison, in poor form, scored 12 points, while Dejan Kulusevski scored 8 times.

Spurs only had to book their Europa League position, but Postecoglou will start next season in the race to qualify for the Champions League and in the hunt for a still elusive trophy for the first time since 2008.

Toney has hinted that he is fit for a new challenge and his exploits with England this summer have further whetted his appetite for more games at the highest level.

The Brentford striker has yet to try his luck in Europe and with just 12 months left on his current contract, the Bees would likely be forced to cash in on their striker only to waste him for nothing next summer.
