Tottenham have been told why they are looking to stay on as a midfielder who seems certain to leave before the summer move window closes.
In recent times, all the attention at Spurs has been whether talisman Harry Kane will move to Bayern Munich or finish the rest of his contract in north London and go loose next summer.
This saga of moves seems to be coming to an end, as the German giants finally reached an initial agreement with Daniel Levy to sign the English captain.
However, Kane is the only Tottenham player expected to be signed in the final weeks of the window, with several other first-team names set to leave.
One of those names is Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, the Dane has been one of the club’s most productive players for the past two seasons.
Spurs are expected to let the 28-year-old go if they manage to sign a replacement, and Atletico Madrid are keen to strike a deal.
Levy is known to need a payment of around £25 million for the former Southampton star, whose taste in play does not fit what Postecoglou expects from his midfielder ahead of the new campaign.
The Danish foreigner is recently under contract until 2025 and has made 145 appearances since joining from Saints in the summer of 2020.
But when asked if his former club deserved to keep Hojbjerg, Alan Hutton told Football Insider: “I think he’s been one of Tottenham’s most productive players in recent seasons.
“Now there are a lot of things around him to move forward.
“I think they have a clever intensity in midfield, but Ange [Postecoglou] could bring someone in. I think disorders are more defensive.
“I would like them to stay with Hojbjerg and work on defense.
“But if the player needs to leave, Ange probably won’t stand in his way and then he can get money to reinvest in the team. “
Postecoglou has at least made some paintings in his defence by bringing in Dutch centre-back Micky van de Ven from Wolfsburg, while there is also news about the arrival of Victor Nelsson from Galatasaray or Edmond Taposoba from Bayer Leverkusen.
But in terms of what the Australian expects from his midfielder, Yves Bissouma has so far been notable in Hojbjerg’s role in pre-season.
The former Brighton midfielder was nowhere near his best performance in his first crusade in north London, but he looks much more like the player who excelled on the south coast in his outings before the start of the season.
And with Oliver Skipp and Pape Matar Sarr also stepping up with Postecoglou and Rodrigo Bentancur now back in soft training, it looks like there is possibly no room left for Hojbjerg.
Tottenham opens the new Premier League crusade against London rivals Brentford on Sunday.
