Leicester City have reportedly struck a deal with Tottenham Hotspur to get Oliver Skipp out of their hands, and the midfielder is now set to go through a medical breakthrough for a possible move to the King Power Stadium.
The Athletic’s David Ornstein writes that the two clubs have agreed a payment of more than £20m and that Skipp traveled to the East Midlands for a medical on Sunday.
Coincidentally, Leicester City will host Tottenham Hotspur on Monday night as the opening weekend of the Premier League comes to a close. However, Skipp would not be able to take part in this match: his record was recorded in the Premier League on Friday lunchtime.
Previous reports had reported that Tottenham were keen to bolster their midfield before agreeing to a move for Skipp, but if that was indeed the case, they now look happy with newcomers Archie Gray from Leeds United and Lucas Bergvall from Djurgarden. reinforcements for now.
If that move goes through, Skipp would be reunited with Spurs academy graduate Harry Winks, who moved to Leicester last summer and played a key role in helping them secure automatic promotion to the Premier League as championship winners.
Skipp will also be a familiar face to new manager Steve Cooper, who took control of him in England’s youth phase. Cooper joined Leicester earlier this summer after Enzo Maresca sneaked through Chelsea.
Leicester may face an uphill war for further relegation to the championship as they face charges for allegedly violating the game’s benefits and sustainability rules, which can be punished by a problem deduction.
Leicester were also affected by the loss of striker Patson Daka following an ankle injury he suffered in a pre-season friendly against Lens last month, with Cooper confirming that he is expected to be out for “months”.
Meanwhile, Tottenham are looking to build on last year’s fifth-place finish, which left them two points away from a Champions League spot.
Spurs dropped just four points in the first ten games of last season, but were very consistent for the rest of Ange Postecoglou’s first campaign in charge.
Postecogolou reflected on the new season: “Obviously, we replaced football and had some very clever moments and moments where we had to work really hard to get spin and probably the end of last season was disappointing for us.
“There’s a lot there, but for us, if we can in that area, then more consistency will give us an opportunity and a platform to try to achieve something, which is what you try to do every season. ”
