Tottenham said the sale to Real Madrid would be an “absolute nightmare” as the value claim emerges

Tottenham Hotspur have been asked through one of their former players to keep Cristian Romero at all costs, although a club like Real Madrid is doing a big deal for the star.

Romero spent time at Belgrano, Genoa, Juventus and Atalanta before joining Tottenham in August 2021. The centre-back joined Tottenham on a season-long loan which was later made permanent for £42m a year later.

In total, Romero has played games for Tottenham and has scored six goals and one assist.

The Argentinian foreigner can be reckless at times and is prone to receiving red cards, although Tottenham manager Angel Postecoglou turns out to know how to get the most out of him.

When fit, Romero and Micky van de Ven are Postecoglou’s first-choice duo in central defence. They are also one of the most formidable defensive associations in the Premier League.

Unfortunately for Spurs, both players have been singled out as imaginable Real Madrid players in the future, due to their enormous talent.

Indeed, earlier this month he claimed that Madrid had drawn up an initial offer of €50m (£42. 6m) for Romero. Separate reports have claimed that Spurs need £150m before agreeing to sell.

Former Spurs player Alan Hutton, who played for the club between January 2008 and August 2011, has now given his verdict on Romero’s situation.

The former right-back called it an “absolute nightmare” if Spurs were to sell the 26-year-old, while claiming he is worth £70million or more.

“The payout would be huge,” Hutton said in an interview with Football Insider.

“If you think about what Crystal Palace needs for Marc Guehi, around £70 million, I know he’s young and he had a brilliant European Championship, I like him as a player. . .

“I know Romero can be reckless at times, that’s what he is, but I think for what he does, his recovery, he fits perfectly at Tottenham.

“I think they would be talking about the same mark (£70m) and if they don’t reach it, I don’t think they will sell.

“He is a vital player for Tottenham along with Van De Ven, I think they complement others.

“Losing Romero at this level of the window before the first game of the season would be an absolute nightmare for the coach. “

Romero is expected to start when Spurs begin their crusade with a move to Leicester City on Monday night.

Summer signings Dominic Solanke and Archie Gray can appear either, it remains to be seen how much religion Postecoglou will place in his compatriot Lucas Bergvall.
