Tottenham are the latest to sign Leeds midfielder Archie Gray, with centre-back Joe Rodon in a position to move in the opposite direction.
Leeds rejected an offer from Brentford of around £35m for Gray on Sunday, but are preparing for the 18-year-old’s departure this summer after failing to secure a quick return to the Premier League in May.
Spurs have now moved to the front of the queue, ahead of Arsenal and Chelsea, with terms agreed with Gray and talks with Leeds at a complex stage.
While negotiations continue on the final main points of the transfer, it will be a player plus money transfer, and Rodon will return to Elland Road on a permanent deal after spending the 2023-24 campaign on loan at Leeds.
The failure to be promoted directly from the Sky Bet Championship has put Leeds on the edge of a straining to make at least one lucrative sale to comply with Financial Fair Play rules.
Gray thrived under Leeds manager Daniel Farke last season and made 52 appearances in midfield and at right-back for one of the club’s most valuable assets.
Dutch winger Crysencio Summerville and Italian striker Wilfried Gnonto are among the club’s other profitable assets, but Gray appears to be the first to leave, and Tottenham are confident of securing theirs after a dramatic 24 hours.
Spurs manager Angel Postecoglou has given the green light to trade the highly valued Gray, who will have the opportunity to play in the Europa League with the north London club.
