Tottenham’s $28m deadline is key for Ange to sign Timo Werner to make Spurs’ replacement permanent

Ange Postecoglou is laying the foundations for lasting good fortune at Tottenham and it turns out that new signing Timo Werner must be a long-term component of it.

This is according to Sky Sports move expert Florian Plettenberg, who reported on Wednesday that Werner “feels very comfortable” at Spurs and needs his loan at the club for a permanent move.

According to Plettenberg, he could only charge Tottenham around 17 million euros ($28 million), Spurs have until the start of the European Championship on June 14 to do so with RB Leipzig.

Spurs can still reach an agreement to sign Werner on a permanent basis beyond that date, but they are threatening to see rival clubs enter the picture, which in turn may increase the striker’s asking price.

Plettenberg reported that while Tottenham did not sign Werner permanently, they are still “very open” to leaving Leipzig this summer.

Werner, who scored 23 goals in 89 appearances for Chelsea between 2020 and 2022, arrived on loan at Tottenham in January this year.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reported at the time that Werner was “very interested” in working with Postecoglou and that the Australian had “approved the deal”.

Postecoglou completed the praise for Werner earlier this month after scoring his first goal since joining the club in a 3-1 win over Crystal Palace.

“I think it’s been important,” Postecoglou said.

“You can believe that if we hadn’t brought him in in January, it would have been a much heavier burden for the other players in the group. Especially when Sonny was away too. We threw it in the trash immediately.

“And when you come in January, especially for someone like Timo, who’s a mature player, he’s not a young player that we recruited to develop him, we bring him in to have an effect, and I think he did an effect for us.
