Alejo Véliz has once been linked with an exit from Tottenham in the middle of a failed spell with the Premier League team.
The striker made history at Rosario Central when he made the club’s most expensive sale by swapping the Argentine side for Tottenham in August 2023 for £13m.
This has surpassed the move of Facundo Buonanotte to Brighton in January 2023, in a deal worth up to £10m, and Argentine legend Angel Di Maria, who joined Benfica in 2007 for around £6. 8m.
Hopes were high that the 19-year-old could move to Spurs after impressing for his country at the Under-20 World Cup.
Let’s temporarily return to the offer, though: the 20-year-old is 12 months away from signing his six-year contract at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, but he’s unlikely to spend much time there.
To date, he has played eight times for Tottenham and scored a goal in a game against Brighton last December. The striker has not yet begun to fit in with Spurs and in those appearances he has only accumulated forty-five minutes of action.
That led to him being loaned to Sevilla in January, but he has played 31 minutes for the La Liga team in six games.
Although he enjoyed minutes during Tottenham’s pre-season tour of Japan and South Korea, his compatriot Will Lankshear was pleased through manager Ange Postecoglou.
The 19-year-old, named Premier League Player of the Season 2 last season and the England Under-19 foreigner, looks to be an exciting skill for Spurs.
With Tottenham also in the market for a new striker, that could put Véliz in a difficult position, not to mention he is Richarlison and Son Heung-min in the attacking pecking order.
Now, according to journalist Uriel Iugt, Serie A’s Fiorentina are keeping a close eye on the former Rosario Central player, who was once a target of Real Madrid.
He added that the Italian team could make a formal offer in the coming days, but specified whether it would be a loan or a permanent deal.
In addition, Rudy Galetti, an insider on the TEAMtalk transfer, warned that a possible move to Fiorentina was gaining momentum.
He tweeted: “Fiorentina is piling pressure on Alejo #Veliz. The Italian club is offering to be sent to #Tottenham for the Argentine player, as indicated by @urieliugt. News is expected soon.
This comes months after Fabrizio Romano claimed Tottenham would send Véliz on loan for the 2024/25 season. In February, Véliz said he wasn’t sure where his long-term was headed.
“I don’t know what’s going to happen [in the summer]. If I stay, time will tell. To begin with, Sevilla and their fans will have to be satisfied with me because I’m very happy to have come here and I hope a lot of smart things happen,” he admitted.
It remains to be seen if any offer reaches Tottenham.
