Tottenham Hotspur are in the midst of an injury crisis midway through the 2023/2024 crusade and will want to bring new faces to their squad in the January transfer window. Timo Werner is expected to be the first call-up to walk through the door as he prepares to fly to London to complete his medical ahead of a six-month loan deal with RB Leipzig, however, there are a few other calls on Daniel Levy’s radar. Here, Express Sport explores what Tottenham’s starting XI could look like after January if all the business is expected.
Goalkeeper – Vicar
Guglielmo Vicario will lose his place in Tottenham’s starting line-up between the sticks, barring injury. The Italian goalkeeper has been extraordinary since moving from Empoli to north London in June for just £17. 2m, a payment that now looks like one of the bargains. of the summer.
Defender – Porro, Romero/Dragusin, Van de Ven, Udogie
Pedro Porro, Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven and Destiny Udogie are all in Ange Postecoglou’s system, but the arrival of Radu Dragusin may muddy the waters in central defence. Tottenham are keen to sign the 21-year-old defender in January and are said to have made progress in the final stages of negotiations with Genoa.
He is expected to charge Spurs around £25m and would provide much-needed Romero and Van de Ven in central defence. Napoli were also interested in Dragusin, but did not seem willing to meet the value that Genoa was asking for.
Midfield – Bissouma, Maddison, Bentancur/Gallagher
The midfield is a domain that has seen a lot of replenishment this season with injuries to James Maddison and Yves Bissouma upsetting Postecoglou’s plans, but once they have compatibility, either man is sure to start. The third position in the midfield trio may be occupied by several players, adding Rodrigo Bentancur, Pape Matar Sarr and Conor Gallagher.
The Chelsea star has been linked with a move to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in January, but it may not come cheap. If Les Bleus were to let it pass this month, they would demand a payment of between £50 million and £60 million. It is unlikely that Spurs will be able to keep up the pace of their campaign at this level, so the deal is up in the air unless they can recoup some of the budget from player sales.
