Tottenham’s Pedro Porro compares Liverpool striker Ruben Amorim to Ange Postecoglou

NEWS. . . BUT NOT AS YOU KNOW IT

Tottenham star Pedro Porro has appointed Ruben Amorim to the summit and Sporting head coach Ange Postecoglou amid speculation that he could take control of Liverpool this summer.

Amorim, 39, is considered one of the young managers in European football and is reportedly known as Liverpool’s number one candidate to succeed Jurgen Klopp.

Xabi Alonso is the clear favourite for the job, but he governed himself well and was out of the race by compromising his early career with Bayer Leverkusen, the new Bundesliga champions, last month.

Recent reports from Germany indicated that Amorim had been presented with a three-year contract and had reached an initial agreement to manage the Merseyside giants.

However, the Portuguese vehemently denied those rumours last week, insisting he will remain fully focused on the rest of Sporting’s season, with the club seven points behind champions Benfica at the top of the Primeira Liga table.

Amorim led Sporting to the club’s final league in 2021/22 and Porro played a key role after arriving on loan from Manchester City that season, making 30 appearances throughout the campaign.

Porro would spend 18 months in Lisbon before joining Spurs and it is clear that the Spaniard has fond memories of his time with Amorim.

“He’s young, he’s got a lot of ambition, a bit like Ange Postecoglou at Tottenham,” the Tottenham right-back told Portuguese newspaper Expresso.

“He needs more and that’s what makes him one of the most talked-about coaches, coveted by so many teams in Europe.

“He has a specific way of running and he faces any opponent, which is also similar to what we do at Tottenham, there are several cities.

“He’s very well-known and recognises how Sporting and Tottenham play, there’s a transparent identity, whether it’s winning 5-0 or losing 5-0. “

Nemanja Matic, who played with Amorim at Benfica, is surprised by the Portuguese’s remarkable start in control and believes he would be a “great replacement” for Klopp at Anfield.

“I see Ruben Amorim at a club,” the Lyon midfielder, a former Manchester United and Chelsea player, said this week.

“I don’t know if it will be Liverpool, but if it happens, I’m sure it will be a wonderful replacement for Klopp.

“Ruben understands football and has the personality and character to be a coach. It already is at the moment.

“I’d love to see him in the Premier League, let’s see what happens from here. “
