Manchester United do not have to offer an option to extend Raphael Varane’s contract for up to 12 months.

The ruling leaves the defender free to hold talks with foreign clubs about a summer move from when the transfer window opens.

Varane’s existing contract expires at the end of the season, but there is a clause that gives United the option to automatically terminate, something United have so far refused to accept.

But the Daily Mail reports that United remain interested in extending Varane’s stay at Old Trafford and plan to start negotiations on a new deal next month.

Speaking for the first time since then, the 29-year-old posted on Instagram: “I’d just like to say I’m doing great and feeling great after the cardiac arrest I suffered at Bournemouth.

“The explanation for why I’m doing so well is because of the heroic moves of the players, the staff, the medics and the paramedics. I’m thankful that this happened to me surrounded by those heroes. They saved my life. I’ll never know what you did for me.

“While I’m not happy that I didn’t participate, I’m very proud to see the boys continue the war without me. The fighting spirit I’ve noticed in the last 3 matches has given me a well-deserved boost.

“I will be doing whatever I can in whichever ways are possible to help the gaffer and the club. In what capacity that is remains to be decided as I’m due to meet with specialists in the new year.”

Rodrigo Bentancur did a wonder early on his return to the Tottenham squad against Bournemouth today.

His return bolsters the characteristics of Spurs’ midfield and could have an effect on their January plans, as it could make them more willing to sell Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg if an offer comes in for him.

Juventus are closely linked to Hojbjerg, who sent Bentancur back to the bench.

On Bentancur’s return, Spurs head coach Ange Postecoglou said: “It’s great. He had a smart week of education with us and I had a smart chat with him and he was actually looking forward to coming back. “

“Having new legs in midfield with him and Gio (Lo Celso) will help us. “

“If we find something we want to improve, then we’re more than open. We are very analytical and at all times we analyse ourselves to help the club in the most productive way imaginable. “
