English defender Niamh Charles signed a contract extension with Chelsea.
The 24-year-old only agreed her previous deal ahead of last season but after another strong year and an impressive start to 2023-24 she has extended her stay again.
The new contract now binds her until 2027. Here’s Charles:
? “I’m satisfied and grateful. I’ve spent some wonderful years here. I’ve grown a lot and I’m looking forward to the long term and what the next few years bring. “
General manager Paul Green added:
? “Niamh’s performances have been exceptional and have made her a normal foreign starter over the past 12 months. We are very happy with the way he has evolved and as a leader within the group. We are looking to the future to see its continued expansion in the coming years. “

South Korean goalkeeper Kim Seung-gyu will be out for the remainder of the Asian Cup due to a knee injury.
Kim, 33, played in his team’s 3-1 win over Bahrain in the first match of the organization phase, but tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his knee at an educational consultation later that week. Here’s South Korea’s boss, Jurgen Klinsmann:
? “We’re very unhappy about Seung-gyu’s injury, but that’s part of the sport, it happens in tournaments, but we have to move on. We keep it in our minds and fight for it.
“What I told the team is that we are here and that we have a mission, which is to stay until the end of the tournament. “
South Korea is aiming to win its first Asian Cup in years and will face Jordan on Saturday.

There have been strong reports that West Ham have made progress in their attempts to loan Manchester City and England midfielder Kalvin Phillips.
Well, Hammers boss David Moyes is due to speak to the media at 1.3pm (GMT) and you imagine it will be one of the first questions that gets asked. We’ll see if he bites – and bring you those quotes as soon as they materialise.
They’re not the only ones who need to warn Phillips. De fact, it looks like a small queue.

Jordan Henderson may simply be the city of Amsterdam’s representative after his departure from Al Ettifaq, but the English midfielder will probably have to wait before moving to Ajax.
Henderson is now a non-EU citizen since the UK’s withdrawal from the European Union in 2020 and as such will need a painting permit before he can play for his new Dutch club.
There would have been no paperwork to delay a debut before Brexit, which ended freedom of movement for UK citizens, and Henderson is not expected to be cleared in time for Sunday afternoon’s Eredivisie home game against RKC Waalwijk at the Johan Cruyff Arena.
The trip to Heracles next Saturday is the more probable target for the 33-year-old. Failing that, it would be the visit of PSV Eindhoven on Saturday, February 3.
Chuba Akpom, who joined Ajax from Middlesbrough for £11m in August, faced delays when he had to wait to make his first appearance.

It’s been the U-turn of the January window so far: Jordan Henderson finding a way out of Saudi Arabia and signing for Ajax.
Many were content to hand over to Henderson because his summer resolution failed, but his former Liverpool boss believes the complaint would be unfair.
Here’s what Jurgen Klopp had to say this morning, when my colleague James Pearce asked him:
? “We have a life and we have to make choices. Sometimes our decisions are the best at first and look different once you make them.
“I spoke to him and 99 percent of what happened from a football point of view surely went well. It’s the beginning of something that has a lot to expand in the future. He is never critical.
“But then he thought it was better for him and his family to return to Europe and now he’s at Ajax Amsterdam, a sensational club that is in a difficult moment. “

Huddersfield Town have announced the signing of striker Rhys Healey from league rivals Watford.

Watford are now on the lookout to sign a replacement striker this month.

Now, this could be a biggie… My colleagues Raphael Honigstein and Chris Waugh have revealed Bayern Munich are considering a January move for Newcastle United full-back Kieran Trippier.
The German champions are prioritising the signing of a right-back this month, with the England international one of several players under consideration.
Paris Saint-Germain’s Nordi Mukiele — who previously spent four years in the Bundesliga with RB Leipzig — has also been on Bayern’s shortlist but negotiations have proven difficult.
To be vigilant, that. You can read more about this below.

The 20-year-old centre-back arrived at the club’s academy and has inspired this season, making 28 appearances for the Scottish Premiership side, including five in the UEFA Europa Conference League qualifiers.

So let’s get started. They are arguably the most anticipated appointments of the day here; There are obviously a limited number of things to say at the moment.
Mo Salah was injured during the first half of Egypt’s 2-2 draw at the African Cup of Nations with what appeared to be hamstring discomfort.
Here’s what Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp had to say this morning about the 31-year-old’s fitness:
? “We don’t know anything. I spoke to him last night. They are doing additional testing and we will know more about them later.
“At the time it was a shock. He felt it, and we all know that Mo rarely wants to go, so there is definitely something. I don’t have any more data at this time.

Tomorrow will be a day for Ivan Toney.
The striker will not only return to action after serving his eight-month suspension for 232 breaches of FA rules. His Brentford head coach, Thomas Frank, showed that he was going to start and wear the captain’s armband.
That’s at home to Nottingham Forest in Saturday’s 5.30pm kick-off.
The 27-year-old England international is also likely to pop up as a January transfer window topic too, however Frank said this morning Brentford are yet to receive any bids for Toney this month. Sticking a £100m price tag on him may well have helped with that.
You can read more about all this from our correspondent in Brentford, Jay Harris.

Nuno Espirito Santo says the January transfer window will pose a “difficult” challenge for Nottingham Forest.
The head coach believes the window will pose the same problems for every Premier League club, but still hopes Forest will be able to add strength and balance to the squad he inherited a month ago. Speaking this morning, Nuno said:
? “It’s very complicated. You want to perceive that this is a difficult window to use because usually the goals you want are not available.
“It happens in each and every club; Available players are players who are not in a satisfied moment they are in. It happens to us too, hypotheses that our team leaves because they are not satisfied here or safe cases arise.
“We have to be very careful. What you need isn’t what you get.
Forest walked cautiously to the window. They have some leeway and expect to make two or three signings, but they also want the players to leave to end the month on a balanced footing and show the Premier League that they are serious about those benefits and sustainability charges.
But with six players called up for the Africa Cup of Nations and at least five out injured, Nuno is keen to strengthen:
? “You have to balance the squad because of the absences and the number of people in the squad. Those are the paintings we make.

Wolves outcast Gonçalo Guedes is set to swap Benfica for Villarreal after agreeing to return to Spain on loan.
The winger, who received £28m from Wolves when he signed from Valencia in the summer of 2022, returned to former club Benfica in January 2023 after failing to establish himself in the Premier League.
He returned to the Portuguese side for a second loan last summer but was frustrated by the lack of time to play.
His move to Villarreal, 15th in La Liga, comes with buyout features and requires a loan fee, but the Spanish team will cover the 27-year-old’s entire salary.

Adam Lallana will know at the end of the season if he needs to continue his playing career at Brighton.
The former Liverpool and England midfielder has played more than an hour in a game since September in 17 appearances this season in all competitions (including 8 starts) due to minor injuries.
Lallana, 35 years old, club website:
? “First I’ll get to the end of the season and see what happens. I don’t know if this will be my last year playing, but it’s a verbal exchange later in the season. “
Athletic revealed in October Brighton’s plans to keep Lallana in a managerial position when his playing days are over.
He has trained in educational sessions with Brighton’s first team and under-21s and England’s under-21s during the current campaign, encouraged by the club’s head coach, Roberto De Zerbi. Here’s more from Lallana:
? “I’m still not one hundred percent sure I have to do it. But I’d be stupid not to give it a chance, considering I’ve spent the last 15 years as a footballer. Especially the way I’ve been in the box for the last five, six or seven years.
“I’ve always tried to help team-mates. That probably started at Liverpool, when I had a lot of injuries. You start to see the game differently.”

Adam Forshaw is the latest to move permanently to Plymouth Argyle from Norwich City.
A deal has yet to be closed or closed, the 32-year-old midfielder is in talks with the Championship Club.
Forshaw joined Norwich from Leeds United in a casual move last summer but has made two league starts this season.
He has not featured in the league since being replaced at half time during a 3-1 loss to Swansea City on October 28, and has sat out the last five Championship matchday squads.
Forshaw has six months remaining on his Norwich deal.
If Forshaw were to sign, it would be their fifth signing this window, following the acquisitions of Ashley Phillips, Alfie Devine (both Spurs) and Darko Gyabi (Leeds) on loan, and the signing of Matty Sorinola on a flexible transfer.
They update 4 loanees called up to their parent clubs this month: Finn Azaz (Aston Villa, who later sold to Middlesbrough), Kaine Kesler-Hayden (Villa), Luke Cundle (Wolves) and Lewis Warrington (Everton).
