Incarnate Word is scheduled to play a six-game convention-only schedule from February 20 to April 10, the Southland convention announced Tuesday.
The spring change follows the resolution of the August 12 conference to postpone the autumn sports festival in reaction to the coronavirus pandemic.
While 4 of the league’s schools have selected to play exclusively during non-conference hours until the fall, UIW is one of seven remaining Southland groups competing for a championship name and a place in the FCS playoffs in the spring.
UIW confronts Sam Houston State, southeast Louisiana and the northwestern state in the house and moves to take on Lamar, McNeese and Nicholls.
“While the opportunity to play in the spring is different in many ways, we look forward to offering this competitive and championship opportunity,” Southland Commissioner Tom Burnett said in a statement. “The prospect of competing for a national FCS championship with several in the playoffs is an annual goal of the league.
The NCAA approved a maximum of 8 games over a 13-week era starting January 23, leaving UIW with the option to load up to two games without a conference. A spokesman for the show said Tuesday that UIW would seek this possibility. bet only on Southland’s scheduled competitions.
