Ange Postecoglou has an update on Pape Matar Sarr and Alejo Veliz after losing both players to injury in our 3-1 win over AFC Bournemouth on Sunday.
Pape started brightly and opened the scoring in the ninth minute at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. However, he fell behind in the 30th minute and was forced to leave, visibly upset, being replaced by Oliver Skipp. Alejo joined the action coming off the bench as we rejected a 3-0 lead and it seemed like we had touched the area ahead of time. Visibly ill, he limped off towards the end of injury time.
Speaking on our Review Show, Ange told us, “Pape felt his hamstring. He’s obviously very disappointed because he’s leaving with his national team (with Senegal at the Africa Cup of Nations), and he doesn’t need to miss it. Hopefully, there’s nothing so bad that it’s keeping you away all this time.
“Alejo, it’s hard to say. He’s in a lot of pain. We had already made our replacements. We asked him to come down to take it off, as it was evident that the child was in a lot of pain. I don’t know to what extent, obviously it’s disappointing for him as well. We’ll see what the result is.
“Sonny is leaving (for the Asian Cup with South Korea) with Biss (Yves Bissouma, for AFCON with Mali), so there are more demanding situations for us, but nothing that we haven’t faced before. “
The news saw Rodrigo Bentancur return from injury, earlier than expected, and played 59 minutes. Heung-Min Son and Richarlison joined Pape on the scoreboard.
