Van Bommel, the key to Sainsbury’s PSV play

Trent Sainsbury said the possibility of playing with former Socceroos assistant coach Mark van Bommel is the key in his resolve to point out PSV Eindhoven.

Sainsbury’s, 26, has signed a three-year contract with the Dutch champions, who have won the Eredivisie league name in 3 of the last 4 seasons, and trained with his new teammates for the first time on Tuesday.

Van Bommel, a PSV legend who helped the club win four titles in the early 2000s, took over as coach after the World Cup and approached Sainsbury’s after his contract with Chinese club Jiangsu Suning was resolved even though it was all settled last week.

Once the Socceroos center became aware of PSV’s interest, he said the opportunity was too smart to be rejected.

“It’s a massive club and one of the reasons I’m happy to point out is that I already know the coach and the taste it brings to education and how it manages education,” Sainsbury told PSV’s internal television channel.

“I look forward to run with him again. He has concepts in education and he will abandon them and that’s what all successful coaches do.”

“Players sign up and you can see how the day of the match gets to fruition.”

Sainsbury was one of Australia’s better performers in a disappointing World Cup and van Bommel saw up close the qualities of the cultured centre-back who had also generated interest from QPR and Aston Villa in England.

A difficult year in China saw him fall into shame and then ceded to Inter Milan and the Swiss Grasshoppers.

Sainsbury’s said he is relieved to have resolved his long term and to be back in Holland, where he had two successful seasons with PEC Zwolle in his career.

“The PSV is up to the task, everyone knows them on the aggregate and it’s a Champions League club, why shouldn’t you come here?” he said.

“Besides, I love Holland and the rest of the people and that other advantage.”

PSV, for their prestige as champion of the Netherlands, is preparing for qualification for this season’s Champions League.

Victory over an opponent we have not yet decided would advance him to the lucrative organisational stages, which gives Sainsbury the chance to face Barcelona, Real Madrid, Manchester City or Bayern Munich.

“Trent is a defender that we discovered attractive when he was still playing at PEC Zwolle,” PSV’s interim technical director John de Jong told the club’s website.

“Now he is a player with a wonderful foreign experience. Among other things, at the World Cup it showed that it had evolved very well.”
