Liverpool have announced that Virgil van Dijk wants to have surgery on the knee injury he suffered in Saturday’s 2–2 draw against Everton.
Dutch power station ruptured knee ligaments following the reckless challenge of Toffee goalkeeper Jordan Pickford after six minutes at Goodison Park.
Van Dijk was able to leave the area, but an additional assessment of the injury revealed that an operation would be required.
The Reds say that a timeline is not set when you return to action at this stage.
It’s a nightmare situation for Liverpool: Van Dijk had missed a minute’s action in the Premier League since September 2019 and his influence on the team was instrumental in his Champions League and Premier League victory in the following two seasons.
The club is more positive than the summer signing of Thiago Alcántara, who was also given a knee scanner on Saturday night after the first play he saw Richarlison expelled, is no big deal.
However, technician Jurgen Klopp will now have to reflect on what his team’s life will mean without Van Dijk, 29, over a significant period of time.
The Reds manager chose to point to an update when Dejan Lovren moved to Zenit St. Petersburg this summer, insisting that midfielder Fabinho could be upgraded as a sideman, and has already done so this season.
But after replacing Joe Gomez out of form with Joel Matip, betting his first game since the first day of the season at Goodison Park, Klopp will have to team up with the untested duo and suffering opposite Ajax in the Champions League on Wednesday.
Nat Phillips, 23, with an APPEARANCE in the FA Cup to his decision in any aspect of two loan terms in Stuttgart last season, is now the replacement option with Billy Koumetio, 17, another highly qualified but unproven alternative.
Liverpool’s defence has already been elusive this season, giving thirteen goals in five games, adding seven in Aston Villa, with Van Dijk in the last four, so his absence will generate genuine doubts about his chances of keeping his distance in a race by name.
Klopp, however, was willing to lend Gomez his after a few volatile weeks.
“The loose kick (for Everton’s first) wasn’t lucky because Virgil wasn’t on the court, we took care of him in the game but it was the first corner when he wasn’t on the court,” he said.
“Joe Gomez played a sensational game. Smart game. I don’t care about the kids.
“The challenge we have now is that I’m not in a good mood, I’ve hurt players in the locker room and it’s not smart. “
The only thing in Liverpool’s favour would be that no team defends so well so far and Liverpool’s attack characteristics are among those in the league.
Not that it made much difference at Goodison Park, where they doubled after taking the lead after 3 minutes of Sadio Mane and then Mohamed Salah’s 100th goal in 159 games, a brilliantly instinctive volley.
Two headbutts were his defeat, Michael Keane’s first in one corner, then an attractive Lucas Digne center that gave Dominic Calvert-Lewin the chance to do what he does and stay in the position for now to beat Andy Robertson and beat Adrian.
Liverpool have submitted an application to the Premier League requesting one of the VAR’s decisions.
They asked why Pickford’s challenge to Van Dijk was not regarded as a red card just because the Dutchman ruled offside by a replay and also by an explanation of the mechanics that caused Mane to declare offside in preparation for what would have been the winner of additional time Jordan Henderson. .
