Flora, the recipe for one of its dairy-free spreading products following customer tension.
The company added whey to Flora Butterly after discovering that “some consumers are not yet in a position to sign up for the herbal trip. “
Vegans were left livid by the addition, some threatening to boycott the brand.
More than 5,000 others have signed a petition against the addition in more than 12 hours.
Previously approved through the Vegan Society, an aggregate of vegetable oils (sunflower, oilseeds and flax) involving omega-3s was extended.
On Twitter, a former customer tweeted, “As a vegan, I’m disappointed you’ve added milk to the vegan buttery flora of the past.
“This looks like a huge, dead step backwards. I bet other people haven’t noticed.
“Many other people are fanatical and would possibly not buy anything if classified as vegan, even if they eat. “
Another lashed out: “We are beyond disappointment. This is not a 100 percent commitment to combating the climate emergency.
“You didn’t give vegans and other people allergic to dairy products a choice. “
A third added: Of all that has happened in the craziest years, Flora adding whey in Flora Buttery’s recipe is actually what broke me. I wish I had a joke. “
In a statement, the company said it had recently introduced Flora Plant, a vegan and dairy-free alternative.
One spokesman added: “At Flora, we pride ourselves on our herbal products that are evolving to satisfy consumers’ desires and offer everyone options.
“Our primary purpose is to inspire us to adopt a plant-based diet.
“However, after hearing a significant number of consumers who lack the familiar taste of whey at Flora Buttery, some consumers are still not in a position to sign up for the herbal adventure and are looking for a select product.
“As a result, we need to replace Flora Buttery’s recipe and new products and packaging will appear in stores.
“The new recipe includes a small amount of whey that is obviously classified on the front of the new pack and also stands out in the ingredients.
“The new product variant comes with the Vegan Society certification logo.
“We know that some consumers would possibly find this news disappointing and we must assure them that Flora’s diversity remains mainly vegan. “
