Arsène Wenger said he was “very sad” when Serge Gnabry turned down a contract extension at Arsenal in 2016.
The German foreigner left the Emirates Stadium for Werder Bremen that year with a loose play before transferring € 8 million to Bayern Munich a year later.
Following a move on loan to Hoffenheim, Gnabry has established himself as a key player for Bayern, who reached the Champions League final on Wednesday night, and for the German national team.
“We’re not going to Gnabry, I bought it when I was 15 in Stuttgart and he got in much harm,” former Arsenal coach Wenger told beIN SPORTS.
“He’s creative, he can score goals, with his right foot, with his left foot, smart power, smart penetration, very, very smart with the timing of his careers. His tendency is too easy, as I told you with talented young players.
“But he has matured a lot and is one of the dominant players now in Germany.
“No, no [I didn’t need to let him go]. We had an agreement with him. I loaned it to West Brom and he didn’t play a game, he came back here, he got injured.
“We worked very hard with him for six months and he dated the German under-21 team.Bayern reached an agreement with Bremen and ultimately did not need to extend the contract [at Arsenal].
“I’m very unhappy that we couldn’t get over the line with him because he knew he would have a wonderful future. He can play No. 10, he can be No. 9, he’s a very wise player.
