Women’s Super League’s all-time top scorer, Vivianne Miedema, has joined Manchester City from Arsenal on a three-year deal until June 2027.
Miedema had scored a record 80 goals in the Women’s Super League during seven seasons at Arsenal. In May, he announced that he had made the difficult decision to leave the club.
He now has to sign for rival Manchester City, who finished above Arsenal in the league last season and moved away at no cost after his contract with Arsenal ended in June. He will wear the number six shirt at Manchester City.
Speaking about the move, Miedema revealed, “I went through a difficult era that I think about a lot. Now is the time to look to the future again. At City, I found my place. “
“The club offers me all the situations I want to be at my best level, on and off the pitch. Also, I’m part of a team here that competes for trophies. My ambitions are big and we can achieve wonderful things together. I can’t wait to get started. “
“The explanation why I chose City is because they have the same ambitions as me. They need to win the league and the titles. Looking ahead, I’ve said I need to play with the most productive players in the world and I think City have done that. “
Miedema’s last two years have been marked by illness and injury. She tested positive for Covid-19 at UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 before tearing her ACL in December of that year, ruling her out of the FIFA Women’s World Cup. He sat in action late last year but then suffered a setback that required minor knee surgery in March.
She admitted: “I haven’t played as much football as I would have liked in recent years, but I believe and hope that my most productive years are yet to come. I hope I can help the team as much as I can. “
“I’m really excited to be part of the team and for the women to help me and bring me back to my best. If I get back to my best, we can achieve wonderful things together. “
At Manchester City, Miedema will play alongside fellow foreigner Jill Roord, who has been recovering from an ACL injury lately. When he spoke to me last year, Roord told me what it’s like to play with Miedema. “She’s the most productive in the world, she’s very smart in football, she knows where the area is, so yes, I still enjoy betting with her. “

“I definitely talked about everything with Jill, she appreciates it,” Miedema said. “If Jill likes it, it will have to be a smart place. This made the selection much easier. Jill and I have a very similar mindset when it comes to football, we either have to play football or feel appreciated, and he said it’s smart to be here.
“I’m very lucky because I know my two Dutch women here and I already know a lot of English women. As I’ve been in England for so long, I feel that, although I may not know women personally, – that I’ve been there for so long that we’ve noticed each other so many times. I’m excited to be a part of this team and meet everyone. “
Like Miedema’s former club Arsenal, Manchester City will also have to fight to qualify for the UEFA Women’s Champions League organisational levels. They will have to negotiate a two-legged match in September, a level at which they have already fallen.
It remains to be seen what Miedema’s resolution means for Manchester City. They have played the last two seasons with the two English full-backs, Chloe Kelly and Lauren Hemp, along with a central striker, Khadija Shaw. Before Roord was injured, he played in attacking midfielder Shaw.

Miedema is compatible to play as a center nine or as a number ten at safety. Shaw, the most sensible scorer in the women’s Super League last season with 21 goals and her record since joining the club, scoring 50 goals in 57 league games, makes her practically insensitive. Between them, the two men have scored 130 goals in the Women’s Super League. On the club’s online page, where she introduces herself as number nine, Miedema jokes: “Luckily, she doesn’t count on me!”
Manchester City head coach Gareth Taylor said: “We can’t wait to welcome Viv to City and see her flourish over the next 3 years. Our ambition is to compete at the highest level and for the highest honours, and Viv is aligned with that. “. desire. “
“She is a player with whom I am very happy to work because she is a player I have admired. Viv will be a real asset to the team. “
