LANDOVER, Maryland (AP) – The Washington football team played as an organization of boys determined to make a call for themselves.
Peyton Barber ran for two touchdowns and Dwayne Haskins recovered from Washington after a 17-point deficit to beat the Philadelphia Eagles 27-17 on Sunday on coach Ron Rivera’s debut.
Haskins stepped in to give a speech to his teammates at halftime because Rivera received a pre-planned intravenous line in his first game since he learned he had some form of skin cancer.
“Playing as a quarterback, I learned over the years that there were opportunities in a game or in the locker room before the game to fire the boys,” said Haskins, who completed 17 out of 31 for 178 yards and a touchdown. “I think we were inside a pause. . . . looking to find a way to motivate the boys and we discovered a way to get back in the moment part and win.
After falling 17-0 after a couple of Landing Passes from Carson Wentz, Washington relied on a punitive defense and opportunistic offense in his first game since owner Dan Snyder nevertheless agreed to replace the team’s call and former workers alleged sexual harassment within the organization.
Rivera matched her nickname “Riverboat Ron” won in nine seasons with Carolina. Rivera went for the fourth and one of the Five Eagles with the score tied in the middle of the last quarter.
Barber ran for the first attempt, then scored from him to give Washington a 24-17 lead.
“I did it because I looked for the boys to make sure they understood that I was with them,” Rivera said of the project. “In my first two years as head coach, I made that mistake, not showing up on the team early enough for me on that, so it took us a little longer. I think we can get that first, and they did.
Zach Ertz dropped a pass in the fourth and third for the Eagles 42 inside and Dustin Hopkins threw a 40-yard basket to take the score to 27-17.
Wentz was captured eight times and launched two costly interceptions on an injury-free attack line with two boys, right against Jack Driscoll and right guard Nate Herbig, starting the first games of his career.
“We can’t have the mistakes, we can’t have the catches, we can’t have the ball losses and expect to win, especially against a divisional opponent,” Eagles coach Doug Pederson said.
Wentz’s pass to Jalen Reagor was delayed the moment the fourth recoiled and went through Fabian Moreau in Philadelphia 45. Haskins then hit four consecutive passes after starting 3 out of 12 and hit Logan Thomas for a six-yard landing launch to reduce the deficit. 17-7.
Jimmy Moreland then passed in front of Wentz’s pass to John Hightower and returned him 32 yards at 20 eagles. Barber two tries out of 1 before running to score that reduced him to 17-14.
After Philadelphia propelled Washington’s fifth catch, Jake Elliott ran out of a 53-yard area goal.
The Eagles did it with a quarter and four of Washington’s four, Jon Bostic shot Wentz in a flash in the middle and became a 38-yard pass through Hopkins that tied 17 early in the last quarter.
Washington’s defensive line made its way to Philadelphia’s exhausted line, with no triple Pro Bowl shot right over Lane Johnson and three-time Pro Bowl right guard Brandon Brooks. Ryan Kerrigan led the way with two catches and the overall selection of the moment, Chase Young, received one. .
“We were hoping to pass out and make plays,” Kerrigan said. ” We had a lot of productive guys in this room and I’m glad I was able to show it a little bit today. “
Wentz threw a six-yard scoring pass at Ertz and a 34-yard best draft to Dallas Goedert in the first half.
“I put our defensive in position several times,” said Wentz, who finished 24 out of 42 for 270 yards. “I have to be better. I own this. “

Wentz introduced his first interceptions in 191 attempts, dating back to December 1.
