They made it to fourth place in spectacular fashion: now Buckie Thistle is enjoying the rewards of the Scottish Cup primary draw.
The Highland League side faced champions Celtic after their third-round match against Broxburn Athletic on Saturday. This unlocks a huge amount of cash for the Jags, who will reap huge rewards when they take on Brendan Rodgers’ team in Glasgow. President Garry Farquhar will have his eyes on the paycheck, but everyone in Victoria Park will also accept the park’s challenge to take on stars like Kyogo.
A clip of the players watching the draw went viral, as their good luck over the weekend was handsomely rewarded. Huddled around a table in a pub, players can be seen jumping on seats, dancing and singing after Craig Conway and Danny Swanson put on one of the biggest matches in the club’s history.
A heroic effort from Buckie was enough to defeat East League leaders Broxburn Athletic in front of 1,200 spectators. Scott Adams saw a second yellow card for an unnecessary challenge to Brox captain Nick Locke after just 22 minutes. Errol Douglas put Buckie up 1-0 before Darryl McHardy scored the equalizer in the 98th minute to send the game into overtime.
Lewis Turner sparked jubilant scenes in Broxburn with what appeared to be the winner in the 120th minute. But Josh Peters answered two minutes later at the other goal to make it 2-2 after a crazy game and the visitors triumphed 5-4 on penalties.
The club published the draw: “Buckie Thistle will face Celtic FC in the fourth round of the Scottish Cup. Buckie Thistle vs. Celtic!! What a giveaway!”
