WATCH: Motorcyclist jumps into river to escape police, framed camera video shows

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WWMT) — A search has been announced for a motorcyclist who dove under the waters of the Kalamazoo River while fleeing police in Michigan.

A Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety officer attempted to impede motorcycle traffic Monday around 4:30 p. m. m. for registration violation.

Instead, the motorcyclist drove away from the officer, but eventually the motorcycle came to a stop due to mechanical issues, according to the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety.

Abandoning his motorcycle, the man fled through Veteran’s Memorial Park and entered the Kalamazoo River to arrest him.

Instead of giving up, the man continued to swim, but was swept underwater by the river’s current. It has not resurfaced, public protection officials said.

Several officials entered the Kalamazoo River in an attempt to rescue the man, but located him.

Public safety officials were expected to continue their search to locate the man, who has yet to be identified.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety Criminal Investigation Division at 269-337-8139 to speak with a detective.
