Werder Bremen will basically use Tahith Chong as an end in their season loan at the club, but their coach has hinted that he may also have a role to play in the defense.
The young foreign Dutchman left Manchester United on loan last week in search of valuable first-team experience and making a breakthrough in senior football.
Chong played 12 times in all competitions for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team last season, with his last Europa League appearance in the last 16 games against LASK on the left back.
However, United’s lender returned to the right wing when he made his debut in Bremen on Wednesday night, winning a pass in a 4–1 friendly win, coincidentally opposed to Austrian club LASK.
The 20-year-old rose through the ranks as a right winger, but never had an effect on an offensive role when he had his chance in the first team.
Chong’s most productive functionality for United would possibly have come as a left-back in his last match and Bremen manager Florian Kohfeldt even admitted that the youngster had prospects for defensive progression.
“He is a very technically gifted player who can play in any of the bands,” Kohfeldt told Bremen’s official website. “It’s also very fast, which will help our game. Defensively, he has prospects for progression, is still at the beginning of his career and we need to help him continue to make his future. “
