Mohamed Salah made Premier League history as Liverpool beat West Ham to open up an eight-point lead at the top of the table.

As Liverpool faced a woeful West Ham team at the London Stadium, Salah scored his 17th Premier League goal of the season and made his 12th and 13th assists to set up Cody Gakpo and Diogo Jota.

It is the eighth game this season in which Salah has scored a goal and an assist and set a new season high in the competition, after Luis Diaz opened the scoring for Liverpool with a clinical finish.

Mohammed Kudus hit the post for West Ham, but Liverpool temporarily pulled away when Gakpo and Salah scored before the break. Trent Alexander-Arnold’s deflected shot made it 4 after the break before Jota made it 5′.

Arne Slot was able to protect Ryan Gravenberch and Gakpo from suspension ahead of Sunday’s clash with Manchester United, as Liverpool moved eight points clear of high-flying Nottingham Forest at the top.

Liverpool are also nine numbers ahead of Arsenal and 10 ahead of Chelsea, having played the same number of games. Chelsea travel to Ipswich, while Arsenal travel to Brentford on New Year’s Day.

Mohamed Salah proved his worth against Liverpool once again, encouraging them to a 5-0 win over West Ham.

The 32-year-old scored his 20th goal of the campaign in all competitions, becoming the first Reds player to hit that mark in eight consecutive seasons.

He also provided two assists, the first an audacious double nutmeg for Cody Gakpo’s goal and a second to tee up Diogo Jota for goal number five, all just three days before he will be free to start negotiating with overseas clubs about a potential move in the summer.

Trent Alexander Arnold, of three key players out of contract at the end of the season under captain Virgil van Dijk, featured in the fourth, all after Luis Diaz received the ball for the rampaging Reds.

Another comprehensive win for Arne Slot’s side, against a predictably outclassed West Ham, left them eight points clear at the top of the Premier League and another step closer to a first title in five years.
