Mohamed Salah made Premier League history as Liverpool beat West Ham to open up an eight-point lead at the top of the table.
As Liverpool ran riot against a sorry West Ham side at the London Stadium, Salah scored his 17th Premier League goal of the season and made his 12th and 13th assist by setting up Cody Gakpo and Diogo Jota.
It is the eighth game this season in which Salah scored a goal and an assist and set a new season high in the competition, after Luis Díaz opened the scoring for Liverpool with a clinical finish.
Mohammed Kudus hit the post for West Ham, but Liverpool temporarily pulled away when Gakpo and Salah scored before the break. Trent Alexander-Arnold’s deflected shot made it 4 after the break before Jota made it five in the game.
Arne Slot controlled Ryan Gravenberch and Gakpo from suspension ahead of Sunday’s clash with Manchester United as Liverpool pulled eight points clear of top-flight Nottingham Forest.
Liverpool are also nine points ahead of Arsenal and 10 points ahead of Chelsea, having played the same number of games. Chelsea travel to Ipswich, while Arsenal travel to Brentford on New Year’s Day.

Once again, Mohamed Salah proved his worth at Liverpool by powering them to a 5-0 win at West Ham.
The 32-year-old scored his 20th goal of the campaign in all competitions, becoming the first Reds player to hit that mark in eight consecutive seasons.
He also provided two assists, the first an audacious double nutmeg for Cody Gakpo’s goal and a second to tee up Diogo Jota for goal number five, all just three days before he will be free to start negotiating with overseas clubs about a potential move in the summer.
Trent Alexander Arnold, another of the three key players out of contract at the end of the season along with captain Virgil van Dijk, chipped in with the fourth, all after Luis Diaz had got the ball rolling for the rampant Reds.
Another comprehensive win for Arne Slot’s side, against a predictably outclassed West Ham, left them eight points clear at the top of the Premier League and another step closer to a first title in five years.

Joe Gomez is on the sidelines as Liverpool suffered an injury in the 5-0 win over West Ham.
Gomez injured his hamstring and stopped in a sprint in the first half. He replaced Jarell Quansah after instructing him to resign.
The 27-year-old replaces the injured Ibrahima Konate, who has been absent since the win over Real Madrid last month.
But Gomez’s hamstring injury means Quansah will most likely be needed alongside Virgil van Dijk against Manchester United on Sunday and leaves Liverpool with just two fit centre-backs ahead of a busy month.
