Mohamed Salah made Premier League history as Liverpool beat West Ham to open up an eight-point lead at the top of the table.

As Liverpool ran riot against a sorry West Ham side at the London Stadium, Salah scored his 17th Premier League goal of the season and made his 12th and 13th assist by setting up Cody Gakpo and Diogo Jota.

It is the eighth game this season in which Salah scored a goal and an assist and set a new season high in the competition, after Luis Díaz opened the scoring for Liverpool with a clinical finish.

Mohammed Kudus hit the post for West Ham, but Liverpool temporarily pulled away when Gakpo and Salah scored before the break. Trent Alexander-Arnold’s deflected shot made it 4 after the break before Jota made it five in the game.

Arne Slot controlled Ryan Gravenberch and Gakpo from suspension ahead of Sunday’s clash with Manchester United as Liverpool pulled eight points clear of top-flight Nottingham Forest.

Liverpool are also nine points ahead of Arsenal and 10 points ahead of Chelsea, having played the same number of games. Chelsea travel to Ipswich, while Arsenal travel to Brentford on New Year’s Day.

Once again, Mohamed Salah proved his worth at Liverpool by powering them to a 5-0 win at West Ham.

The 32-year-old scored his 20th goal of the campaign in all competitions, becoming the first Reds player to hit that mark in eight consecutive seasons.

He also provided two assists, the first an audacious double nutmeg for Cody Gakpo’s goal and a second to tee up Diogo Jota for goal number five, all just three days before he will be free to start negotiating with overseas clubs about a potential move in the summer.

Trent Alexander Arnold, another of the three key players out of contract at the end of the season along with captain Virgil van Dijk, chipped in with the fourth, all after Luis Diaz had got the ball rolling for the rampant Reds.

Another comprehensive win for Arne Slot’s side, against a predictably outclassed West Ham, left them eight points clear at the top of the Premier League and another step closer to a first title in five years.

Joe Gomez is on the sidelines as Liverpool suffered an injury in the 5-0 win over West Ham.

Gomez injured his hamstring and stopped in a sprint in the first half. He replaced Jarell Quansah after instructing him to resign.

The 27-year-old replaces the injured Ibrahima Konate, who has been absent since the win over Real Madrid last month.

But Gomez’s hamstring injury means Quansah will most likely be needed alongside Virgil van Dijk against Manchester United on Sunday and leaves Liverpool with just two fit centre-backs ahead of a busy month.

Arne Slot is asked if Mohamed Salah is the overall player after scoring 17 goals and thirteen assists this season.

“If you look at his numbers, you can’t argue that, but there are different players in different leagues that have a lot of quality,” he told Sky.

“But Mo is up there right now. I may have scored more today, but I also liked his score for the off-the-ball team.

“He’s in a very good place. Let’s hope he can stay like this for a long time.”

Mohamed Salah said he and Liverpool remain “far away” from agreeing a contract after inspiring the Reds to a 5-0 win at West Ham and continuing his remarkable season.

Salah scored and scored two more goals as Liverpool moved eight points clear at the top of the Premier League, in what will be their last game before being able to move to foreign clubs on January 1.

The 32-year-old has scored 17 Premier League goals and provided thirteen assists in just 18 games this campaign, and has now also reached 20 goals in all competitions for the eighth consecutive season for Liverpool.

Salah said his goal was to win the Premier League with Liverpool, as the Reds had a clear eight points at the top.

Mohamed Salah, speaking to Sky Sports:

“I am satisfied with the result. We scored early and dominated the game, that’s good. The first nutmeg I was lucky, at the time I meant it.

On the way to a Ballon d’Or season?

“The only thing I think about is that Liverpool win the championship and be part of it. I will do everything possible for us to win the trophy. We just have to stay focused and humble and get there again.

“I’m just looking to enjoy the game. I’m disappointed about some missed opportunities, but we came here to win and that’s the most important thing. I’m hungry for more.

Last point of his contract. Are we close to the news?

“We are very far from that, but I don’t need to publish anything in the media. It’s nothing, keep going. I need Liverpool to win the Premier League.

Arsenal and Chelsea still have to play this round, but that means Liverpool have currently played the same number of games as their London rivals.

The result is that the Reds are nine numbers ahead of Arsenal and 10 ahead of Chelsea. Their closest rivals are Nottingham Forest (eight behind), while Manchester City is 14 behind.

It seems like Mohamed Salah is setting a new record every week this season. Is he heading towards one of the most productive campaigns in Premier League history?
