Manchester City and Sevilla will meet in the 2023 UEFA Super Cup final as part of the competition’s 50th anniversary.

Pep Guardiola’s side scored a hat-trick of trophies at the end of the 2022/23 campaign, adding their first Champions League title, while Sevilla lifted their record number of UEFA Cup/Europa League crowns to seven.

Guardiola’s men will now travel to Greece to face Sevilla in an exclusive match that will win the first major trophy of the season after losing to Arsenal in the FA Community Shield final.

The Sporting News looks at the history of the UEFA Super Cup, its design and formation and previous trophy winners.

The UEFA Super Cup was originally called the European Super Cup before its first final in 1973, following a concept proposed to UEFA through Dutch journalist Anton Witkamp.

The concept of the festival was to “definitively choose the most productive team in Europe in a given year” as part of the premiere of the European national season in the first weeks of the campaign.

The festival has undergone some adjustments over the years, but the fundamental format remains the same: it was renamed the UEFA Super Cup in 1995.

The final pits the winner of last season’s first European club festival against the winners of the secondary festival, which in 2023 is the Champions League versus the Europa League, and the previous versions were the European Cup versus the UEFA Cup.

Until 1998, the final was played in two home-and-away matches, with the UEFA Cup/Europa League participant replacing the 2000 UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup winners, after the festival was stopped.

Although this is an “extra match” in the club’s calendar, it is perceived as a key trophy to win, with the Champions League champions flexing their muscles and winning nine of the last ten finals.
