Whitecaps looks to get back to the front of The Toronto Rematch

After an urgent “pause” of the season, Vancouver Whitecaps coach Marc Dos Santos spent the last two days “rewinding” the game.

Whitecaps coach and his team spent hours tracking the remains in video of their 3-0 loss to Toronto FC on Tuesday, highlighting their mistakes, weaknesses and successes as they tried to expand a game plan for Friday night’s rematch.

“The way we pressed was incredibly dissatisfated. And then we left a lot of area for the opponent,” he said.More cautious technique with the game in what we want to do.

When forwards Lucas Cavallini or Yordy Reyna pressed the TFC baseline, the two players also found themselves remote with acres of area behind them for Toronto to exploit. The 4-4-2 team the Caps had deployed the previous season did not look like they did in the win over L.A. Galaxy before COVID-19 stopped the season. The Vancouver midfielders were not transparent about the triggers, did not recognize Cavallini or Reyna’s tension, or found the property too far out of position.

“I thought we were able to (press) pause there, stay five months without working with the full group together … and then once we came back and had the majority of the guys together, I thought we would press ‘play’ and go on with what we did in the five months ago. It was wrong,” he said. “I took responsibility for that. And the players can tell you I took responsibility for that.

“The references of pressure were not clear, and they need to be very clear in a team. Half were going, half were not going, and when you have that, it’s the worst. You have to go with everybody or nobody goes.”

The 3-0 loss in the opening game of Phase 2 of Major League Soccer’s return-to-play saw Toronto have 75 per cent of the possession and overrun the Caps through the middle of the field, stifling Vancouver’s efforts to play the ball out of the back.

Winning the Toronto ball is not the team’s biggest problem, but maintaining it.

“When you have the ball and give it to an opponent at a wonderful price in massive amounts of times during the game, what will happen is that you will spend a lot of time defending, a lot of time to lose and grant more opportunities for the opponent,” Dos Santos said.

The Caps (2-4-0, 8th West) will likely replace the alignment and body of workers for Friday’s game at BMO Field (5 pm HP, TSN, TSN 1040) as opposed to the Reds (3-0-3, time this) at the time of the game of their swing on the road in 3 games.

Vancouver has deployed a 4-3-3, 4-2-3-1 formation this season, however, the option of a three-way baseline is also there with the emergence of Andy Rose as a competent central defender. like having Derek Cornelius and Jasser Khmiri available. Erik Godoy is unlikely to play, and Dos Santos called his season a “frustrating story.”

Having Rose sixth in a 4-3-3, or as a component of a three-man line-of-defense, would be the midfielder who had such unrest in the first game – Rose had one of Vancouver’s two key passes, compared to Toronto’s 22 – strengthening the defense and giving him more roles for the transition forward.

“The midfielders are our players that it is vital to connect if you need to build from the four back, through the strikers,” Dos Santos said. “But they have to be in the right places, and how we felt in the last game betting with two midfielders with the characteristics of Rusty (Teibert) and Leo (Owusu) did not allow us to have much exit. Your. There were not many times (they were) away from the ball, or away from the ball, and then we couldn’t identify a link with them.

“We’re going to be molded in another way, not only to handle better when we don’t have the ball with TFC numbers, but also to have more features in our structure.”

The 3 Canadians compete 3 times, with the winner betting the Canadian Premier League Games champion for the Canadian Championship and a place in the CONCACAF Champions League.

After Friday’s game against Toronto, Caps Montgenuine on Tuesday (5 pm HP, TSN, TSN 1040), a game to be played against true enthusiasts, with the Impact allowing up to 250 enthusiasts at Stade Saputo, before returning home. for two more matches opposed to the Impact and some other opposite to the Reds.

Toronto-born Caps player Cavallini knows what those games can be like, with no guarantee of play beyond the Canadian series.

“(Tuesday) was frustrating. No one likes to lose,” said the striker, who is still looking for a first purpose as a member of the Caps. “But not only lose, but also put a functionality like that, for me … It was a disgrace. I know we can do much better. It’s just a game where we report our bugs and can only improve. You can’t be worse with this last feature, it was a big mess and we have to be better.
