Finally, find Cam Newton, the rookie quarterback for the New England Patriots and the lowest paid player in the NFL.
Newton, the 2015 League Most Valuable Player and the first overall pick in the 2011 draft, is betting on the minimum number of veterans this season. His base salary of $1. 05 million is tied 32nd among NFL appellants along with Blaine Gabbert, Mike Glennon, Joe Flacco, Colt McCoy, Geno Smith and his own replacement, Brian Hoyer.
In terms of average annual value, Newton’s one-year contract signed through Newton in July ranks among the quarterbacks, according to Over The Cap. Marcus Mariota (two years, $17. 6 million), Case Keenum (three years, $18 million), Chase Daniel (three years, $13. 5 million) and Jeff Driskel (two years, $5 million) all got richer contracts this off-season.
Newton, who can earn up to $7. 5 million through incentives, has already surpassed the modest salary he moved to after languishing in a loose company for 86 days, but the 31-year-old thinks of a construction.
In a Tuesday appearance on WEEI’s Greg Hill Show, Newton insisted that he was not involved in his contract. If he continues to play his potential, he said, he will be rewarded on time.
“Surprisingly, but quite true and factual, if I do what I have to do, as I expected, it may not even be a topic of discussion here in the future,” Newton said. “You’re talking to a user who — money, at this specific level of my career, is not important. Let’s be honest. I made money. But for all I’ve played this game, I haven’t won it yet, and that’s why I’m playing.
“It’s not about the money. It’s a matter of respect. Especially to get back to the negotiating table when this opportunity presented itself, I didn’t even need to be coming and going for this and that. I said, “Listen, let’s close the deal. Let’s do it. ” And as much as it’s worth it, he’ll only pay dividends in the future.
“And I this: a sensible guy said this, and this guy is my father, not all blessings come in the form of monetary means. Simply because you have money, the blessing takes many other forms besides this monetary compensation. So for me, if I do what I have to do, everything else will take care of him.
Newton smoothly won a quarterback festival opposed to Hoyer and Jarrett Stidham at the Patriots educational camp and recorded impressive numbers in two games, completing forty-five of 63 passes (71. 4%) for 552 yards and a landing with an interception. he has yet to worry about his legs, adding almost as many yards on the court (122) as the four defenders of the combined Patriots (129). No NFL player has more landings this season than Newton’s Four.
Newton led the Patriots to a 21-11 win over the Miami Dolphins in Week 1 and nearly erased a double-digit deficit in the last quarter Sunday night in Seattle, losing 35-30 on a line of purpose in the final seconds.
Over the past few months, Newton has spoken in sparkling terms about the organization and head coach Bill Belichick, a reciprocal compliment. WeEI host and former Patriots asked if he in contemplated signing a contract extension this season, and possibly taking less cash to stay in New England for the long term.
“You have to understand, it’s literally the last of my worries, ” replied Newton. “If we had to put an analogy on it, it’s under so many paintings on my table that I’m not too focused on it. I appreciate and love Patriots culture, it is a position for me that has been therapeutic, it is a position that has just been my expansion and makes me better, and besides, it is a position that gave me everything for my desires at this specific moment in my life.
“Through all this, I’m going to leave the cards as they are and do the things I can control. “
