Soccer, the most popular game in the world, originally known as “association football. “Newspapers looking for a shorter word started calling it “assoc. “This denomination was temporarily shortened to “soc”, then became “football” again.
While rugby also began as a football game, in 1823 something happened that forever replaced the kicking game. A player named William Webb Ellis, instead of throwing the ball over the goal line, picked it up and passed it. At first, observers don’t know what to think. In the end, they agreed that it was a smart idea. The game was played at rugby school and became known as rugby, later abbreviated as rugby.
Through it all, football-style football and rugby-style football have found their way to America. The result was an American mix of the two games.
