Wild shots fly over USC and Lincoln Riley ahead of the start of the 2024 football season

Lincoln Riley arrived in Los Angeles with incredibly high expectations at USC after replacing Clay Helton in 2021. Riley did a wonderful job in 2022, winning 11 games despite being paralyzed by Alex Grinch’s defense. In 2023, Riley’s resolve to stay with the Grinch bit him. . USC has lost five of its last six regular-season games despite being coached by one of the most productive quarterbacks in the country, Caleb Williams. The Trojans struggled defensively, ranking 121st nationally in defensive touchdowns.

SEC Network analyst Paul Finebaum analyzed Riley’s failure as head coach at USC. He also boldly predicted that Riley would not return as head coach after next season, which would be shocking after Riley signed a long-term contract worth $110 million.

On a Monday morning with “McElroy and Cubelic in the Morning,” Finebaum had this to say:

“I don’t know how you can get out of this [purchase] through a negotiated deal,” Paul Finebaum said. “But I think his only way back is as a coordinator. “

USC opened the year against LSU in Las Vegas and faced Michigan a few weeks later in September. The Trojans also host a tough festival against Penn State and Notre Dame at the Coliseum.

In Oklahoma, Lincoln Riley won two Heisman Trophies (Baker Mayfield and Kyler Murray) and went 55-10 in seasons with 4 Big 12 convention titles.

The concept that Riley will fail at USC is legitimate, but the concept that Riley will leave USC after 2024 is highly unlikely. Even if 2024 doesn’t go exactly as planned, Riley arguably wouldn’t give up the new defensive coaches he hired unless Anything Crazy (the Dallas Cowboys’ primary coaching assignment opening up) takes him away from Los Angeles.
