The occasion took place last Saturday night at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Glasgow, with this year’s theme being the founding of our club and the half century that followed, with Willie Maley at the helm as the character who was there all along. .
One of the planned activities is the opportunity for each table to choose a ‘Willie Maley XI’ with a variety of features for each position, as it was published exclusively in The Celtic Star ahead of the occasion and a form available at the evening that will end thanks to our guests.
While we still have plenty of fans who watched Celtic play in the final years of Willie Maley’s tenure, for most of us it will depend on what we’ve read or heard about those fabulous Celts of yesteryear. Their accomplishments and exploits are tinged with drama and, in some cases, tragedy. There is no right answer, it is completely private and subjective.
To “face” the “greatest Celtic team of all time” selected by the fans in 2002, our Willie Maley XI will line up in a similar formation, with a goalkeeper, 3 defenders supported by a defensive pivot or a presenter, two forwards. midfielders and a double attacking force provided by the wingers on the flank. We play football in the Celtic style of Glasgow.
I suppose you’ll be interested to hear some of the varieties selected through our guests, anything that will allow you to talk before tomorrow’s game. Here is the variety from one of our sponsoring tables, the FPSG.
Each table was named after a wonderful Celt from that era, and the FPSG awarded Bobby Hogg, a gentleman whose son of the same name I recently had the thrill of meeting and sharing his memories. Look at this place.
The table included a photo and a brief biography of the player, and what we said about Bobby.
An excellent full-back of all time, Bobby was part of Willie Maley’s excellent team in the 1930s, winning league, Scottish Cup and Empire Exhibition medals during an excellent career.
John Thomson; Willie McStay, Jimmy McStay, and Willie “Peter” McGonagle George Paterson; Patsy Gallacher and Peter Scarf; Jimmy Delaney, Jimmy McGrory, Jimmy Quinn and Davie Hamilton.
One of our committee volunteers, Michael Taggart, is an integral component of the FPSG and also had a table with members of his family circle. It’s table 14 and he’s engaged to former Celtic Willie Leitch, due to a circle. connecting relatives. Here’s what we had to say about Willie.
Here’s Willie’s medal in this Glasgow Charity Cup campaign.
And here is the team chosen by the visitors named in his honor, a true combination of wonders from the beginning to the end of this great man’s reign.
John Thomson; “Sunny Jim” Young, Willie Loney and Jimmy “Dun” Hay; Malcolm MacDonald; Patsy Gallacher and Willie Buchan; Jimmy Delaney, Jimmy McGrory, Jimmy Quinn and Charlie Napier.
So who’s on your team?
