Wisconsin cancels second Big Ten game amid COVID-19 outbreak

The University of Wisconsin canceled its Big Ten game at the moment and will no longer play at Purdue on Saturday, raising considerations about an ongoing COVID-19 outbreak.

The school reported 27 active cases between 15 athletes and 12 staff members since October 24 and aired on a Tuesday saying that all football activities would remain suspended due to the coronavirus outbreak, CBS Sports reported.

Although the school publishes main points on player information, it has been reported that the quarterback and the team quarterback are among the active cases.

Coach Paul Chryst is also among the inflamed limbs.

Big Ten protocols require inflamed players to be absent 21 days after the date of their initial antigen test.

“I share the sadness of our student-athletes and our staff,” Badgers sports director Barry Alvarez said in a statement.

“We’ve noticed an improvement in our test numbers, but enough to give us the confidence to resume our overall activities and play our game on Saturday,” Alvarez added.

The Big Ten plays an 8-game condensed format of the normal season. Because of its canceled games that cannot be scheduled, Wisconsin will need to play the rest of its games this season to be eligible to participate in the Big Ten Championship game.

If other groups cancel more games, the convention can use a rounded average number of games played according to the team to adjust the minimum rule.

“We will continue regularly, take proper fitness precautions and look forward to getting our team back to the box as soon as possible,” Alvarez said.
