Wolves moved out of the relegation zone thanks to Matheus Cunha’s goal from a corner as Bruno Fernandes was sent off for Manchester United in their 2-0 defeat at Molineux.
Cunha was the outstanding player on the pitch throughout but it was still a surprise when his second-half corner was allowed to curl beyond Andre Onana and into the net. It is the second time in three games that United have conceded directly from a corner.
Fernandes’ red card for two bookable offences had already left United up against it and there was no way back for Ruben Amorim’s team, Hee-Chan Hwang’s 99th-minute goal, set up by Cunha, of course, putting the seal on a huge win for Vitor Pereira’s Wolves.
That victory of Boxing Day was just a second victory of the season in the Premier League against their own fans, however, there are two victories of two under Pereira that leave the Wolves in 17th place.
United’s defeat drops them to 14th place in the Premier League standings.
The Red Card in Fernandes presented with shame attenuating cases for this defeat united and there was sufficient internal Molinine tension that love players can evoke an equalizer until it is due a lot in the game. But he was still poor.
Cunha’s goal was a fifth set-piece goal that United have conceded under Amorim, a second directly from a corner inside a fortnight. No team in the Premier League has conceded a greater proportion of their goals from such situations so far this season.
Much of the United is now in the long term, however, it is something that Amorim wants to deal temporarily to save him this season from being worse. Especially when the most general consultation of the taste of the team remains a factor for some players.
This fixture was a 4-3 thriller last season but both clubs have changed manager since then and with the two Portuguese coaches committed to their 3-4-2-1 systems, it made for a very different contest. United were the team who looked to be struggling more.
Even in game 11 against 11, they lacked impulse and moved the ball too slowly to win a merit against the conflict sides that began the game between the last three. Amorim will be more convinced than ever that radical adjustments are needed for the next season.
But next season is a long way off if United continue to play like this. It’s next Newcastle, then back-to-back games opposite Liverpool and Arsenal in the Premier League and FA Cup, respectively. It gets more confusing before it gets better.
Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim speaking in the press conference:
“The concept wants time. I already told you, it will be a complicated moment and we are far from being at the end of this moment. We will have to continue and focus on the next thing.
“They want time to train, they completely replace. The way of playing is complicated for them, it is very complicated for staff to transmit all the information. When there are no results, they find it even more complicated to believe. “
He was asked if he disappointed to grant in a crow.
“When you jump, the slightest touch, unlike Tottenham, was on the arm, today it was on the back. When you touch someone while they are jumping, it is difficult to catch the ball. “
He asked if he feared United would be dragged across the table. . .
“In this moment we just have to survive and to take some time to work on the team. We already knew it. I started this job and we started with the team, the new idea, without any time to train, with a lot of tough games. We already knew it, it’s a long journey.”
Asked how long it will take for his ideas to work at United…
“I have no idea. Instead of watching the output to perceive how long it will take, day in and day out, to improve, watch to watch the videos, use every minute of education and try to earn points, because it is vital in this area.
They ask him if he passes through Fernandes for the red card.
“I’m frustrated through the red card, but it can happen. He needs to pass to the ball, it’s not like he’s been looking to avoid a game with a yellow. He needs to pass to the ball and then to the other Guy touches the ball first, then there’s contact.
After scoring opposite Leicester in Pereira’s opener, Cunha followed up with purpose and a hand to the wolves in that defeat at Manchester United.
“He’s a top-level player,” Pereira said afterward.
“He is a special player. He can do things that can make a difference in the small details. We check his corner because we need the swing to explore that. But you can paint a lot and in the end nothing happens. With this type of player, it can happen” .
When asked about Cunha’s position as a leader in this Wolves team, Pereira congratulated the Brazilian and the other members of his team. “I notice the day of the leaders in the team,” he added. “They do something. To replace things. “
