Reiss Nelson, an Arsenal academy graduate, says he is in a position to remain and fight for an initial spot at Emirates Stadium this season.

The 20-year-old has been a member of the Gunners’ first team for 3 years, having made his senior network debut in 2017 against Chelsea at Wembley.

He made 39 appearances in all competitions during this period and was on loan at Hoffenheim Club of the Bundesliga.

England’s U-21s started last season as a member of Unai Emery’s senior national team and remained there when the Spaniard was sacked and replaced by compatriot Mikel Arteta in December.

Former Manchester City coach has already recruited Brazilian striker Willian from Chelsea and has teamed up with several players in their quest to build a team capable of competing for honours.

Despite the risk of increased competition, Nelson says he doesn’t aim to leave the club or apply for a loan.

“For me, it’s about putting me in the starting lineup,” he said on the club’s website.

“The boss made a lot of adjustments and brought many of the most sensitive players to the team and I feel we can only do it ourselves, but I need to fight for my position, be hungry and get a position in this initial lineup. .

Arteta showed his confidence in Nelson by allowing the young man to throw the first penalty in Arsenal’s win at Wembley on Saturday, which he sent with some luck to the back corner.

Nelson said he sought to kick the first kick in his Community Shield victory in 2017, but his claim was rejected through then-boss Arsene Wenger.

Then, when the opportunity presented itself again, he had to let it pass.

“I tried to kick a penalty [against Chelsea in 2017], but I think I was 17 at the time and the [Wenger] coach wouldn’t let me do it,” he added.

“So I think if I ever get a chance to get one back, I’ll be the first, I’ll be sure, I’ll choose a position and reach it.

“I had a chance, I went to Mikel and told him I’d take it, and then I cheered myself up and he let me take it.

‘It’s a little strange because the walk is very long, but when I got hit, it seemed pretty big, so I thought you’d let me hit, hit a place and hope for the best. He’s inside! It’s a great season of confidence and starting a season like this is vital for all young players.

“It’s amazing that we have another trophy and now we have to hold it the season.”
